THE SERVANT SONGS
FROM ISAIAH - Part I

“Many be called,
But few chosen.”
Matthew 20:16b

The wealthy wife of a fisherman, who owned boats & employed fishermen, Salome Zebedee was the mother of James and John Zebedee, disciples of Jesus. Very ambitious for her sons, Salome requested of Jesus, “Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on Thy right hand, and the other on the left, in Thy kingdom.” And Jesus answered her and her sons wisely, “You don’t know what you are asking. Are you” James and John, “able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Jesus, “We are able.” What confidence in the flesh! They had not even begun to recognize the unselfishness of Jesus and His passionate mission to redeem humankind. Again, Jesus said to them, “ You shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on My right hand, and on My left is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of My Father (Matthew 20:20-23).
“Many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first” (Matthew 19:30). As disciples of Christ, we Christians are to humble ourselves before the mighty hand of GOD to become the servants that can execute His will and extend His kingdom on earth.

Jesus was our example of a righteous, holy life lived for the executing of His Father’s will and purpose. Matthew says of Jesus, “And when Jesus was baptized, He went at once out of the water, and behold, the heavens were opened, and he [John] saw the Spirit of GOD descending like a dove and alighting on Him; and lo, a voice out from heaven said, “This is My Son, My Beloved, in Whom I delight! (Matt. 3:16, 17 Amp).

There are four “servant songs” listed in Isaiah, which will help us understand the heart of a servant. The FIRST “Servant Song” can be found in Isaiah 42:1-7. GOD, the Father, called Jesus by saying, “BEHOLD MY SERVANT.”

BEHOLD MY SERVANT
ISAIAH 47:1-7 AMPLIFIED:

(1) “Behold My Servant, Whom I [GOD the Father] uphold: My Elect, in Whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice and right [judgment], and reveal truth to the nations [Gentiles].”

• BEHOLD MY SERVANT. Behold, pay attention to this Jehovah’s Servant. Isaiah is foretelling the coming of the Messiah, and expressly speaks of Christ (Matthew 12:18). To Christ, and to Him only, belong all the particulars that follow this statement revealing the Person and the Office of Christ appointed by Jehovah, GOD the Father.

• WHOM I WILL UPHOLD. Jehovah will up hold and enable Christ to do and suffer all those things, which belong to His office of Servant and Saviour.

• MY ELECT. Jehovah, GOD the Father, has chosen or elected Christ to do the great work of saving Jews and Gentiles. Jehovah decrees, “It is too light a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors [of judgments] of Israel.” “I will also give you for a light to the [Gentile] nations that My salvation may extend to the end of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6 Amp.).

• IN WHOM MY SOUL DELIGHTS. Psalm 91:14 tells us that because His Servant Christ set His love upon doing the will of the Father, then the Father will deliver Him in trouble; and the Father decreed to deliver Him and honor Him. God’s thoughts and ways are higher than our ways. To be crucified would not be a deliverance that “men” would consider, but GOD allowed His Son to be crucified that Love might destroy the strongholds of the devil over mankind’s life. Christ gave His life in Love that He might be raised (delivered) to eternal life and honor as He sits at Jehovah GOD’S right hand in honor and glory. This delighted the Father, Who chose to find a way to redeem mankind from the snares of the devil and his hate for godliness and righteousness.

• HE (MY SERVANT) WILL BRING FORTH. Christ shall show and publish by His words and deeds the great salvation that He has brought mankind from the Father.

• JUSTICE AND RIGHT [JUDGMENT], AND REVEAL TRUTH. Christ will show forth the law, and will, and counsel of GOD, concerning man’s salvation. As Jehovah’s Servant, Christ said, I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Light to mankind. And Christ has shown this prophecy to be true, for He is Truth and reveals Himself to all who will seek Him in truth and righteousness.

• TO THE NATIONS [GENTILES]. Jesus has brought salvation to all mankind, Jew and Gentile, by becoming the sacrifice that was required by the Father.

(2) “He will not cry or shout aloud or cause His voice to be heard in the street.

• HE WILL NOT CRY OR SHOUT ALOUD. Jesus did not cry out in a way of contention or ostentation. He did not lift up His voice in the streets to cause a mob spirit of confusion and rebellion, to try to control the people for a personal sense of power. Rather, Jesus spoke the truth in love to show people that they need a personal relationship with GOD, and that they were in need of repentance that brings reconciliation and peace with GOD.
• HEARD IN THE STREET. He had no reason to lift his voice to be heard as contentious and vain-glorious persons frequently do. He was and still is the I AM of glory, and needs no one to “pat” Him on the back to encourage Him to be confident in Who He is.

(3) A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick [the smoking flax] shall He not quench: He shall bring forth justice [judgment] in the earth:

• A BRUISED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK. Christ, in His great love, will not deal rigorously with those that come to Him, but He will use all gentleness: cherishing the smallest beginnings of a relationship with Him by bestowing grace to comfort and heal a person’s wounded conscience. In Biblical times a shepherd made music on an instrument he shaped from a hollow reed plant. A reed is easily broken and bruised, but the shepherd would rather repair his musical instrument than make a new one. Until all hope of repair was gone, the shepherd would not crush it under his feet. This is an example of how GOD does not want to destroy anyone, but rather He will try to repair and restore that person by renewal of the spirit, soul, and body by the Holy Ghost to establish one in the Gospel. He is the Potter, we are the clay to be molded into the image of His Son, Christ Jesus…that image of love and respect for others.

• A DIMLY BURNIG WICK [THE SMOKING FLAX] HE SHALL NOT QUENCH. Smoking flax is like a wick floating in an open lamp or lantern where most of the oil has been used, which causes the flame of light to be very weak and feeble. The wick or flax smokes and gives off little, if any, light, and, therefore, the light is of no value unless more oil is poured into the lamp. That wick of a candle, which is almost extinct, He will not quench, but revive and kindle it again by washing that person in the water of the Word and by giving the oil of the Holy Spirit to strengthen and revive that person.

• HE SHALL BRING FORTH JUSTICE [JUDGMENT] IN THE EARTH: He will bring forth justice and judgment by publishing the law of GOD, or the doctrine of the gospel, which He will bring forth, unto, with, or according to truth, that is, truly and faithfully. GOD did not do away with His law. His law is a light unto our path to guide us in godly ways of righteousness. What was done away with at the cross of Christ Jesus was the law of sin that condemns. Christians are to be led into righteous living by the Holy Spirit of GOD, as sons. Through the grace of Jesus Christ, Christians are no longer under the dominion of sin and death. We are not under that law of sin as slaves, but under the law of grace – as subjects of GOD’S favor and mercy. The judgment of GOD is meant to intervene in a person’s life to get his attention and keep him from going down the path to hell. Judgment is to bring a person to repentance for wrong doing. Thus he can come under the grace of GOD and be saved.

(4) He will not fail or become weak, or be crushed and discouraged, till He have established justice [judgment] in the earth: and the islands and coastal regions shall hopefully wait for and expect His direction and law.

• HE WILL NOT FAIL…BE…DISCOURAGED. Jesus, the Author of Life, is never discouraged by circumstance or what things look like. He, the servant of Jehovah, knows His mercy, grace, power, and authority will triumph over all the wiles of the enemy, the devil. To man, the cross seemed like destruction, but Jehovah GOD used it to bring resurrection and life to all who will believe on the name of Jesus Christ.

• TILL. The story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest story of all time, but the story is not finished until He has put all enemies under His feet…until He has established His law or doctrine of grace, mercy, and justice among the nations of the earth.

• THE ISLANDS. The islands and coastal regions, far removed from Judea, shall gladly receive His law and doctrine when Jesus Christ returns to set up the Millennium kingdom here on earth.

(5) Thus says GOD, the LORD, He Who created the heaven and stretched them forth, He Who spread abroad the earth and that which comes out of it, He Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:

• GOD, THE LORD…WHO CREATED. This is the description of God’s infinite power, and is added to give the assurance of His certain accomplishment of His promises.

(6) I the LORD have called You, the Messiah, for a righteous purpose and in righteousness; I have taken You by the hand and have kept You: I have given You for a covenant to the people [Israel], for a light to the nations;

• CALLED YOU, MESSIAH…FOR A RIGHTEOUS PURPOSE. GOD called Jesus to be the light of the world that men might find the love of GOD and be saved. He called Jesus to restore what the devil had tried to mess up with his evilness, and Jesus will persevere until He brings justice to the nations. Jesus will restore all things as before the rebellion of Satan, and of Adam, so that all Israel and Christian nations can worship and follow Him all the days of eternity in supernatural wonder and abundance forever!

(7) To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness from prison.” [Isaiah 42:1-7-Amplified; Ref. Matthew 12:17-21.]

• TO OPEN THE EYES…DELIVER PRISONERS. Jesus says, “I AM the Truth, the Light, and the Way, and no man comes to the Father except by Me. He is the mediator in whom GOD’S covenant of grace is confirmed with mankind…Jews and Gentiles. He opens the eyes of the spiritual blind to enlighten them with true and saving knowledge. Knowledge of His Word brings the opportunity for deliverance from Satan. One just has to receive it.

Jesus calls everyone to become His servant, His disciple. Each one is asked: are you “able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” To answer this question, one must become a disciple and a servant of the Most High GOD. Jesus suffered for us that the righteous kingdom of GOD might be manifest without fear of evil. Again, Jesus said to them, “You shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with (Ref. Matthew 20:20-23). “YOU ARE MY WITNESSES, says the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know ME, believe ME, AND remain steadfast to ME, and understand that I AM HE. Before Me there was no god formed, neither shall there be after Me” (Isaiah 43:10). Paul proclaimed that if we suffer with Him, we will also be glorified together with Him. The sufferings of this present age are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in each Christian…each son of GOD. We are saved by hope for what we see not, but we are with patience to wait for that perfect age that will be manifest soon with the return of Jesus Christ, as LORD OF THE UNIVERSE and SAVIOUR of ALL who have believed in Him. We, Christians, have a city that we belong to that is not made with hands, but is made by GOD with streets of gold and the gates to the city are made of giant pearls, and the River of Life will flow for all (Rev. Romans 8:22-25, Rev. 21-22).

BELIEVE ON JESUS CHRIST TODAY WHILE IT IS STILL CALLED TODAY (AND NOT ETERNITY).
